“I Can’t, My Thumb is Stuck”

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010
Crazy things happen. I know that in the fishing world there have been many things that happen that make you wonder ” How did that just happen?” Well on my trip this Sunday that question came up often.  We pulled out of Cypress Cove around 6:00 and off to the Lump in search of the elusive Yellow Fin Tuna  that seems to show their fins only a few times a week. One day they are there and next day gone. We were out to see if they were going to show today. I trolled for a while and no action except the rod tips bouncing from the baits swimming.  We pulled the anchor out of the bucket for the first time this year. After setting up and chumming for about 30 minutes we had Bonita all behind the boat and a feeling of a big tuna feeding in the chum was there. But that feeling left when the Sharks showed up. We kept fishing and catching Bonita, practicing for the moment when a big tuna was going to show. And then it happened, I hear “my thumb is stuck”. As I am looking at my angler with his thumb stuck between the reel handle and the clicker, all I can think of is, I should go for a camera. But instead I grabbed a screwdriver and removed the handle and freed the thumb. Well after the laughter stopped and back to fishing, we finally got a bite that was screaming tuna, and then it came unbuttoned. We sent another tender morsel back and that one landed us what would be our only Yellow Fin Tuna of the day. We picked up the gear and headed into see how much it was going to weight. Once we returned to the marina we watched as the scales stopped at 144 pounds.   We have boats available for day and overnight trips.

Venice & Guatemala

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Venice:  Capt Kevin Aderhold had a day trip last Friday but had to run all over the Gulf to find good water with NO SHARKS….They had two Yellowfin and one Blackfin Tuna.  The sharks gave them hell, but they had a good group from south Florida and they will be back for a 24hr trip in June on the 55′  StrikeZone Too. We guaranteed them a lot of Yellowfin.

Guatemala: I just got back from a wonderful trip to Antigua, Guatemala.  My wife is a nurse anesthetist and she goes to Antigua as part of the Knoxville Medical Mission every year.  This year the group helped about 60 people get needed operations. My son Christopher and I escorted her and I managed to slip out on Wednesday to fish with a group of guys that were in Guatemala for a wedding.   What a bunch of nice guys from Alabama.  Justin Schilling, Mike Harlan, Brandon Harlan and a friend.  When we got down to the marina the wind was blowing about 25 kts….I didn’t think we were going to make the trip…But our new captain, Joel/Hercules said let’s go….and off we went…..we were leading the pack of charter boats out of the marina….most of the boats were hugging the coast but our Captain elected to go right into the seas on the STRIKE ZONE…. As we looked back, five boats out of the fleet were heading back…He, like the American captains, just love to fish that boat.  It catches a lot of billfish and takes the sea very well. We dropped our lines when we were 15 miles out and after 20 minutes we had our first Sail…The guys could not believe the fight and show that Sailfish preformed for us….We were in nonstop action all day…we ended up going 14 for 19 on Sails and three Bull Dolphin….three times we had two Sails on at one time and one time we had a triple.   The group with Scott Hartley had fished the day before for three days  on the STRIKE ZONE and they had a total of 58 Sails in three days… Total Sails in four days was 72….The STRIKE ZONE has been out catching the fleet in Guatemala when it is out fishing.

Seth Holl ,the mate on the STRIKE ZONE Too in Venice is heading down to Guatemala for the next few months to mate. He will help a lot knowing a lot of our customers that will be fishing in Guatemala.  He doesn’t know spanish but he will be sleeping with this fine chic, Rosetta Stone on a regular basis.

I have trips going every month to Guatemala that we can add one to four anglers to the group, or you can get your own group….This is the ultimate fishing trip and adventure of a life time….

STRIKE ZONE CHARTERS FISHING REPORTS FOR LOUISIANA & GUATEMALA
Louisiana:  As the new year rolls in and the bad weather gets worse in the Gulf, you have to pick the right day to make your trips….We have a stand by list that we can call when it looks like their will be a break in the weather…That day was last Wednesday night….We had a Alabama coach( not football )  that we had been working with for two weeks to get a good weather day for him to go and wear out the Yellowfin…The seas were less than 1 foot and the temp was about 60 degrees….the night was beautiful.  Capt Kevin Aderhold put him on the Yellowfin….From the first drop it was On…. They end the 24hrs with 13 Yellowfin and a bunch of worn out Bama coaches…..the first part of this week looks good….give us a call….

Guatemala::::Capt Edgar has been give me some good reports but tonight’s was the best …Our group had gotten down to the villa just in time for the college national championship game yesterday…half of the group was for Bama and the other were for Texas…. They thought they were back home with the 55″ Plasma TV and the best beer in the world “Gallo”…. The only difference was the warm night breeze from the Pacific bouncing off of their private pool as they watched the game under the large fetch roof.  The sun came up quick as they were off to the marina for their first day of fishing.  The seas were calm and the sun was bright….They got their first Sail 20 miles out of the marine and it was ON …..they were able to catch and released 27 Sails in one day with three anglers….They have reinforcements coming in tomorrow….one of their friends were delayed because of the bad weather in the states..

We are looking at a great fishing season in Guatemala & Louisiana in 2010.  We will be running two trips per month to Guatemala starting in February where you can join a group. This is a way for the one and two anglers to join a few other anglers and make a trip at a reasonable price.  You can also put you group together and have it private.  Any way you get to Guatemala you will have a blast….The Fishing, Golf and just good old parting is the best in the world….

On another note, in the summer I was able to be a part of the AX Men three show that will be airing on the History Chanel this Sunday night….The part on Louisiana is great…It star a local real swam man …Shelby…..You have to tune in to check this out …It is a funny and educational show especial if you are from the south….

Get your friends, family or business clients and  pack your bags and come enjoy the beat fishing in two worlds with STRIKE ZONE Charters on one of our luxury yachts. The finest fleet of offshore fishing yachts from 55′ to 32′ in Louisiana and Guatemala…

Overnight Tuna On. Strike Zone Too

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Overnight trip on the Strike Zone Too turned out to be a good trip. We left Cypress Cove around noon and ran to our spot where I had fished on my last overnight trip. We began trolling when we arrived. Only a few Blackfin Tuna feeding on the surface. Once it got dark we pulled out the grill and cooked our great meal. I would like to tell you that we had fresh fish but at this point we only had steaks. After we ate and settled in for the night we began catching our bait. The Blackfin Tuna were thick!  It took no time to put thirty or so in the boat and we then were in search of the big boys. After hours of fishing we still were covered up with the Blackfin Tuna and no big Yellowfin Tuna. We caught three Yellowfin Tuna on jigs around forty pounds and then I decided to make a move to another spot to see if the action was any better somewhere else. Needless to say I ended up back where I had started that afternoon. At six in the morning we finally got the bite we were looking for all night. It lasted for what seemed like minutes. Glad we were there when it did take place. We finished our trip up out there and we headed in closer to see if we could catch a Amberjack or two. After breakfast and a little rest we pulled out the jigging tackle one more time. And not sure if was from the lack of life or that our arms were tired  the group decided to pointed the boat to the north. Once back at the dock we pulled the fish out for a final count. The official total was seven Yellowfin Tuna and thirty six Blackfin Tuna.

We have dates open if your group would like to try your luck at this process they call fishing. Give me a call at (504) 382-2108 Kevin Aderhold or (225) 279-3800  Capt. Gary Bonanno.

Another Overnight Sucess

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Capt. Charlie Durand  and Capt. J.W. Berry departed Sunday from Cypress Cove Marina on a overnight trip with Mr. Myke Whitaker and Mrs. Dana Witte from Texas.  They went to do some trolling first and that paid off with two large Wahoo. They fished a while longer and then off to catch the Tuna. Once out to the first stop they began catching Black Fin Tuna.  Most didn’t make it to the boat whole from the sharks getting a snack on the way up with them.  The Black Fin Tuna were thick but no sign of the Yellow Fins. So off to the next stop, there the action seemed to be the same lots of Black Fin and covered with sharks. Capt. J.W. told me that the seas got pretty sloppy around two in the morning and they headed north to where they had caught the Wahoo, and got ready for the morning bite.  Once morning came it was different the current was ripping and the water had changed colors. They fished a while and then decided to go a catch Amber Jacks. Those came with ease,  with the Amber Jacks in the boat and the seas picking up Capt. Charlie pointed the boat to the north and ran in. At the dock the real weight could be set for these two big Wahoo  that they caught on their trip. They weighed 104 pounds and 84 pounds and also had a mess of Black fin and Amber jacks to fill the coolers up with. And as it seems Mr. Myke will have some new friends in Texas when he hands out Wahoo to his buddies that didn’t get to come along on the trip with them.
